Last week the World Bank put out a report called “Turn Down the Heat”, which highlights just what could go wrong if the world temperature increases by 4°C – which we are on track to do.
The report tells us that if we continue current trends, we could reach the temperature by the year 2100, which is just one generation away.
If we warm up this much we could see a huge drop in global food stocks to a level that would not meet demand, the loss of entire ecosystems and rising sea levels.
Third world countries could be some of the worst hit, with cities in Vietnam and Bangladesh likely to be flooded.
Ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica would melt at a rapid rate, on top of the huge amounts of ice that have already been lost.
The report however was not all bad news and no solution, going on to say that if we keep global warming below 2°C, we will be able to avoid these issues.
So what can you do to help keep global warming below 2°C? We recommend reducing your electricity consumption, which will save you money as well as the planet.
